Paid internship providing experience in environmental education, youth development, non-profits, and summer camp administration
Camp Muddy Sneakers in WNC is seeking a talented, energetic college naturalist and/or educator with past experience instructing children and/or working as a summer camp counselor. This intern will participate in seven weeks of camp sessions along with 2-3 weeks of administrative work prior to the start of camp. This is a unique opportunity to work on both the administrative and field side of a non-profit camp.
During the administrative portion, the Muddy Sneakers camp intern will be asked to do the following administrative tasks:
- working with our camp registration software
- completing website updates
- sending out social media posts to local communities
- sending out emails/making phone calls to parents and campers
- helping with supplies, gear, and camp setup
The Muddy Sneakers Summer Camp Intern onboards with a Muddy Sneakers instructor. The Camp Muddy Sneakers Intern will learn how to navigate through the administrative processes including Ultracamp software, email, social media and other daily/weekly logistics.
During the seven weeks of fieldwork, the intern spends a majority of his or her time outside with campers during camp days. The intern assists with the following:
- behavior management
- help ensure camper safety
- lead various naturalist lessons
- encourage campers in character development activities
The Camp Muddy Sneakers Intern shadows two MS instructors while they co-teach during the first week/ session of camp to aid in thorough training of the curriculum, camp traditions, and daily/weekly logistics. A willingness to co-teach and share in leadership roles is required.
In addition to these seven sessions, the Intern will participate in a 4-day pre-camp training and a one-day post camp debrief in August. The remainder of the summer, the Intern will instruct alongside one MS staff member in the field. If needed, college interns may be able to add on additional weeks of experience to fulfill requirements or credit earnings.
2-3 weeks of administrative work starting in early May
7 weeks of field work (may alternate with other intern and/or do admin work/field work every other week. 1 week (4 days with other staff) of staff training. Additional weeks can be added if school requirements differ.
For 10 weeks, can be modified according to school schedule requirements: $1000 stipend (no lodging)
