Missy Rankin

Meet Marjorie Rankin, also known as Missy Rankin, a cherished member of the Muddy Sneakers Board of Directors. Missy’s deep-rooted connection to nature and unwavering dedication to environmental education enrich our mission in profound ways. Missy’s childhood was steeped in the enchanting landscapes of Asheboro, nestled within the ancient Uwharrie Mountains of North Carolina. From exploring creeks to wandering through wooded hills, her formative years were filled with captivating encounters with the natural world. One memorable discovery—a faceted quartz that sparked dreams of hidden treasures—embodied the essence of her profound “a-ha!” moments in nature.

As an adult, Missy’s passion for wildlife and conservation led her to volunteer at the North Carolina Zoological Park. There, she nurtured newborn chimpanzees and cared for various hoofstock, gaining invaluable insights into the intricacies of animal life and the importance of preserving natural habitats.

She shares her love for nature with her husband, Sam Rankin Jr., and their three children—Griffin, Wescott, and Carlisle. In addition, she delights in guiding her four grandchildren through outdoor adventures and fostering a deep appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.

Throughout her life, Missy has been a devoted caretaker to a menagerie of animals. For example, dogs, cats, ponies, horses, and even Cotswold sheep, helped to nurture a profound respect for all living beings. Missy is an avid gardener and dedicated volunteer. She generously lends her time and expertise to numerous local and statewide boards, leaving an indelible mark on her community.

And as a testament to her enduring connection to nature, the faceted quartz that ignited her childhood imagination still graces her desk. It is a tangible reminder of her lifelong journey alongside the wonders of the natural world.
