2022 – 2023 Program Evaluation

Each year, NC State University researchers provide a comprehensive Program Evaluation. This report details the impact of Muddy Sneakers’ programs on students and teachers. We proudly present findings from the 2022 – 2023 school year.

Students reported significant gains in each outcome of interest: science learning, connection to nature, and social-emotional learning. In addition, teachers reported gains in students’ academic and behavioral performance. They also shared their appreciation for the influence Muddy Sneakers had on their own teaching.

The report shows that Muddy Sneakers directly supports standards-aligned science learning while supporting critical thinking and social-emotional learning. Also a direct impact of our mission and approach to learning, Muddy Sneakers supports a connection to nature. This includes including exposing and building appreciation for local natural areas within students’ communities.

Both teachers and students enjoy the program, and evaluation results suggest they benefit from it. With additional support in the classroom, schools may experience increased teacher retention rates and reduced burnout. Students and teachers reported gains in social-emotional learning, including peer-to-peer relationships and connecting with their teachers, which may improve student behavior and classroom performance.
