Cody “Finn” Finney

Cody Finney, or “Finn” as we know him, hails from Elkin, North Carolina, in the heart of the Yadkin Valley. Finn’s love and passion for nature were ingrained in him from a young age. His upbringing in this scenic region helped shape his deep connection to the natural world.

After graduating from Elkin High School in 2009, Finn attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). There, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in English, with a concentration in creative writing and storytelling. This creative background helps Finn bring unique and engaging perspectives to his lessons in nature.

Finn’s journey didn’t stop there. He has an extensive background in wilderness therapy, where he cultivated a passion for using nature’s restorative power to help others. Today, he shares that passion through his work with Muddy Sneakers. He inspires students to connect with and care for the environment on every field trip.

When Finn isn’t out teaching in the field, you’ll often find him exploring nature in his free time. He’s an active Piedmont Hiking and Outing Club (PHOC) member, leading guided hiking and backpacking tours across Northwestern North Carolina and other wilderness areas. Whether hiking, backpacking, camping, or kayaking, Finn always seeks new ways to enjoy and protect the great outdoors.

In addition to enjoying nature on foot and by paddle, Finn also enjoys connecting with animals. For example, you may find him horseback riding and spending time with his beloved cat, Muse. His deep connection to animals and the environment reflects his commitment to stewardship and his desire to share these values with others.

Finn has explored many different areas of the state. However, his love for the foothills and the Yadkin Valley remains as strong as ever. In fact, he continues to reside in his hometown of Elkin, NC.

We’re proud to have Cody “Finn” Finney on our team, helping to awaken a sense of wonder in our students and fostering the next generation of environmental stewards.
