Muddy Sneakers Launches “Less Screen Time, More Green Time!”

Today, outdoor education nonprofit Muddy Sneakers launches its 2025 Spring Appeal: Less Screen Time, More Green Time!. This a month-long fundraising campaign aiming to raise $10,000 to support experiential, outdoor science education for North Carolina students.

As screen time among youth continues to rise, children spend less time outdoors than ever. Muddy Sneakers is working to change that by bringing public school students into nature for hands-on, curriculum-aligned science learning. Through its unique model, students trade desks for trailheads to explore science. Topics include ecosystems, weather, forces and motion, and matter.

“Our students aren’t just reading about science–they’re doing it,” said Muddy Sneakers Executive Director David Rahahę́·tih Webb. “Whether observing insect life in a creek or learning about the water cycle by studying cloud types, they’re building real-world connections that stay with them for life.”

The Less Screen Time, More Green Time! campaign invites individuals, families, and businesses to help close the gap between children and nature. A gift of $42/month sponsors one student for a full year of outdoor learning, and a one-time gift of $10,000 sponsors an entire class.

One Walnut Cove Elementary School student recently shared, “That was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!” This campaign will create more moments like this – filled with the joy and wonder of discovery in nature’s classroom.
