A recent graduate of Western Carolina University, Emma Potter earned her Master’s degree in Public History with a focus on the rich natural and environmental history of western North Carolina. That’s where her love for this region truly deepened, and where she began imagining how to share its stories and science with the next generation.

Though she now calls the mountains home, Emma grew up in Mississippi, where opportunities for outdoor learning were rare. That didn’t stop her from creating her own adventures! She spent four years at Mississippi University for Women. Then, she embarked on a series of internships that wove together history, environment, and community. One summer took her all the way to Sarasota, Florida! There, she researched local parks, studied environmental changes, and even rolled up her sleeves to help remove invasive plant species. It was there that her worlds of public history, natural science, and environmental stewardship began to merge.
Emma Potter has worn many hats along the way. She’s been a museum professional, music teacher, soccer coach, and summer camp counselor. Through it all, one theme has stayed constant: she loves working with kids. Now, at Muddy Sneakers, she’s excited to bring her diverse experiences into the outdoor classroom, where every field trip is a chance to spark curiosity, courage, and connection.
