Emanuel Aragon Cruz

Emanuel Aragon Cruz was raised in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. He grew up in Lee County, surrounded by the landscapes, communities, and natural spaces that define the area. Spending his life in the Piedmont has shaped Emanuel’s deep appreciation for the region’s ecological richness and his desire to help others understand its beauty, value, and importance. That lifelong connection fuels his commitment to providing meaningful, hands-on outdoor learning experiences for young people.

Emanuel earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from North Carolina State University. There, he studied environmental stewardship, sustainability, and community engagement. His academic work strengthened his interest in connecting people to the outdoors while supporting healthy ecosystems and inclusive access to nature.

After college, Emanuel built a career focused on leadership, education, and service within outdoor and conservation spaces. He served as a Diversity and Inclusion Fellow and Instructor with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). During his time there, he led multi-week backcountry expeditions. He also facilitated conversations that fostered teamwork, confidence, and a sense of belonging in outdoor environments. These experiences reinforced his commitment to making outdoor education more accessible and welcoming for people of all backgrounds.

Emanuel later worked as Program Manager for Lee County Parks and Recreation, overseeing recreation programs, managing facilities and community events, and building strong partnerships with local organizations. Most recently, he served as a National Recruitment and Outreach Specialist and Member Manager with American Conservation Experience (ACE). While there, he supported conservation programs and National Park sites across the United States.

As Muddy Sneakers’ Piedmont Program Manager, Emanuel Aragon Cruz is excited to refocus his attention on the region he calls home. He is passionate about connecting students to the outdoors through place-based learning. In addition, he’s excited to spark curiosity, build confidence, and encourage a lifelong appreciation for the natural world within students.

Outside of work, Emanuel enjoys rock climbing, backpacking, contra dancing, and exploring North Carolina’s outdoor spaces.
