Stella Sophia grew up in the Piedmont of North Carolina, where her love of the outdoors began at an early age. She was especially fascinated by wildlife and the many animals that call North Carolina home.
In fifth grade at North Rowan Elementary School, Stella participated in Muddy Sneakers. The experience deepened her love of nature and introduced her to something else: the possibility of a future career in environmental science. Years later, she would find her way back to Muddy Sneakers in a very different role.
Stella got an early start on that path by dual enrolling in college while still in high school. In 2023, she graduated with both her high school diploma and an Associate of Science degree. That fall, she began attending North Carolina State University, where she continued pursuing her interest in science and the natural world. She graduated in fall 2025.
Shortly after graduation, Stella joined Muddy Sneakers. This time, instead of being the fifth grader exploring and learning outdoors, she was the educator helping students do the same. She quickly fell in love with environmental education and the opportunity to help young people build their own connections with nature.

For Stella, working at Muddy Sneakers brings her story full circle. An experience that helped shape her own interests as a child is now one she gets to create for other students. She hopes the time they spend exploring, asking questions, and learning outdoors might stay with them just as her Muddy Sneakers experience stayed with her.
Outside of work, Stella enjoys hiking, reading, working out, and spending time with friends and family. She also spends plenty of time with Brimsley, her dog, and Murphy, her White’s tree frog.
