Erica Brown was born in New Jersey and moved to North Carolina as a teenager. She attended Appalachian State University, where experiences both inside and outside the classroom, including courses in snowboarding and backpacking, fostered a lifelong appreciation for the physical, mental, and educational benefits of spending time outdoors.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Communications, Erica launched her career in broadcast television. Beginning as a production assistant at a local news station, she gained experience across multiple facets of the industry before transitioning to the station’s Creative Services department. There, she partnered with the sales team to support digital marketing and online advertising initiatives, building a strong foundation in communications, marketing, and audience engagement.
At the same time, Erica worked as an educator at the Greensboro Science Center, where what began as a part-time position grew into a nearly 20-year career. During her tenure, she served in a variety of roles spanning education, operations, development, membership, and marketing, gaining extensive experience in nonprofit leadership, organizational strategy, and community engagement.
Erica joined Muddy Sneakers in 2022 and is proud to support the organization’s mission of connecting students with science, nature, and themselves through experiential outdoor learning. Her work reflects a longstanding commitment to making education meaningful, accessible, and impactful for young people.
Outside of work, Erica volunteers on her daughter’s rock-climbing team’s fundraising committee and participates in North Carolina’s Adopt-A-Highway Program. She enjoys reading, writing, genealogy, and exploring the outdoors with her family.
Erica lives in Greensboro, North Carolina, with her husband, daughters, mother-in-law, dogs, and bearded dragon.
