Anne Bullard is a dedicated advocate for youth development and outdoor education. Her journey began in Winston-Salem, NC, where she attended Wake Forest University. After graduation, Anne’s passion for teaching led her across the Atlantic to Dijon, France. There, she embarked on her teaching career. Over the next 15 years, she honed her skills in both private and public education settings. Then, a new chapter unfolded. She and her husband, Grant, purchased Gwynn Valley Camp in Brevard in 1995.
For the past two decades, Anne has co-directed Gwynn Valley Camp. There, she pours her heart and soul into creating a space where young people can thrive in the outdoors. Her commitment to youth development and outdoor education is unwavering. Specifically, she believes deeply in the transformative power of nature. Anne finds immense joy in teaching and witnessing the growth of young individuals as they forge connections with the natural world, fostering a lifelong love and respect for the land.
Beyond her work at Gwynn Valley Camp, Anne is an active member of her community. For example, she has been deeply involved in her church, serving on the vestry and as the senior warden. She also dedicates her time to teaching Sunday school to the youngest class of 5-7-year-olds. In addition, Anne’s commitment to community extends to her role on the Transylvania County Library board. On that board, she contributes her insights and passion for education.
Anne’s dedication to youth extends beyond her camp and community roles. For the past 20 years, she has been an integral part of the Kids in Camp program of Transylvania County. In fact, she currently serves as its chair. This program reflects her belief that every child should have the opportunity to play, learn, and explore in the great outdoors.
Anne and Grant have made Brevard their home. Their four children have grown up immersed in the beauty of the region. Indeed, their daughter, now in her 20s, experienced and cherished Muddy Sneakers during her time at Brevard Middle School when the program was just beginning. This personal connection fuels Anne’s passion for Muddy Sneakers’ mission. She knows firsthand the profound impact outdoor education can have on young minds.
As a board member of Muddy Sneakers, Anne Bullard brings a wealth of experience, a deep love for outdoor education, and a profound commitment to nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards. Her dedication to empowering children through nature aligns perfectly with Muddy Sneakers’ mission. Because of this, she’s a valuable ally as we work to provide experiential outdoor education to all North Carolina 5th graders.
