Backyard Forestry

Have you ever wondered how scientists find the heights of tall trees? In this activity, we’ll be collecting all kinds of information about trees (including their height) without ever needing to leave the ground! Join us in learning about forestry, data collection, and the trees in our own backyards.

All you need are a few materials:

• Journaling supplies
• String
• A tape measure, ruler, or yardstick
• A tree whose shadow you can see and measure

Gather your supplies, find a tall tree on a sunny day, and join the worldwide community of scientists working hard to better understand the world around us.
