Join Scientists As They Do a Bat Blitz!

Scientists Do a Bat Blitz — at Night!

These biologists are busy studying wildlife–even in the middle of the night! Watch this video once through then read the prompts and questions below. Take some time to think about how you would respond and use your notebook to answer them after watching the video. You can watch it as many times as you want!

At 3:05 we saw the Rafinesque Big-Eared Bat, a rare species listed as special concern in North Carolina. These bats mainly prey on insects like moths, and have predators that include snakes and raccoons. What trophic level would these bats fall into? Draw a food chain that includes this unique species and share your drawings with us!

In this video, Mammalogist Katherin Etchison talked to us about Bat Surveying. What characteristics of bats make them mammals?

These scientists set up their survey at night. Why do you think bats are more active at night, instead of during the day?

Thanks to the NC WRC for sharing the work of these scientists with us!
