Matt is passionate about the personal and intellectual growth made possible through hands-on outdoor education. He believes that cultivating an understanding of our natural world is vital to our society’s strength and our environment’s health.

For the past twenty years, Matt has lived and worked in the southeast in various roles focused on education and human development. He has led wilderness trips and team-building programs, taught college courses in environmental ethics, and provided communication consulting on outdoor ethics to land managers and outdoor professionals throughout the United States with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.

Together, Matt and his wife, Jessie, co-authored a book on outdoor adventure in North Carolina and are grateful to call this state their home. Since moving to western NC, he has been a manager for Earthshine Lodge, which provides outdoor education to elementary school students, and worked in sales and marketing for SylvanSport, a local manufacturer of award-winning outdoor camping gear. When not working with Muddy Sneakers, you can probably find Matt riding his mountain bike, hiking, or camping somewhere between Murphy and Rodanthe. Matt and Jessie live in Pisgah Forest with their dog, Hank.
