As educators and students across North Carolina gear up for the transition to the updated 2023 Essential Science Standards, Muddy Sneakers is stepping into action. For example, our team has worked hard this year, diligently updating and aligning our curriculum to reflect these recent changes. We’re excited to share how Muddy Sneakers will continue to support educators and students through this transition and beyond.

Aligning with Science & Engineering Practices

One of the notable updates in the 2023 Essential Science Standards is the incorporation of Science & Engineering Practices (SEPs). At Muddy Sneakers, we’re no strangers to this framework. In fact, we’ve been utilizing SEPs throughout our years as an organization. We’re eager to continue sharing these effective methods with our partners as we navigate these changes together.

Student Field Study

Embracing SEPs in Teaching Methods

Expect to see our teaching methods and curriculum even more deeply reflecting the SEPs framework. We’re enhancing our curriculum to include increased use of models, data collection and analysis opportunities, and more chances for students to construct explanations. These practices have always been at the core of Muddy Sneakers’ approach, and we’re excited to emphasize them even further in response to the updated standards.

Updated Programs for 2024

As a result of the standard updates, Muddy Sneakers has adjusted our programs. Notably, we have phased out the Energy & Heat Transfer option. However, fear not! Many of our beloved activities, like “Test-a-Nest,” have been thoughtfully adapted to seamlessly fit into our Matter program. We commit to ensuring that our programs align closely with the updated standards while providing engaging and impactful student experiences.

Timeline for Curriculum Rollout

As we eagerly anticipate more information from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Muddy Sneakers is preparing to continue our curriculum updates. We’ll integrate new content and activities into our programs throughout the Spring and Summer. When you schedule your Muddy Sneakers expeditions for fall 2024, you’ll see these updates in action firsthand.

Looking Ahead to EOG Review

Additionally, as we look toward the End-of-Grade (EOG) tests for School Year 2024-25, we’re preparing to align our review materials with the updated standards. A robust and standards-aligned curriculum is critical for student success. Therefore, we’re committed to providing resources that support educators and students.
