In the News: Muddy Sneakers on WFMY News 2

On Monday, March 13, 2023, Muddy Sneakers’ story was shared on WFMY News 2, the Triad’s CBS affiliate based out of Greensboro, North Carolina.

In case you missed it, here is a link to the segment that aired during the 4:00 p.m. newscast:

A “sneaky” way to learn about science
How one non profit is getting our kids away from screens and into nature all in the name of education.

The photos featured in the video above were taken at Guilford County’s Rich Fork Preserve during an expedition with Rural Hall Elementary School, a Winston-Salem Forsyth County School.

In the photographs, the students were studying matter through an activity in which they worked in teams to build a town (using natural materials such as rocks, sticks, and leaves) along the stream. Students then presented to the larger group how the water cycle affects their town. With the help of a sponge, students demonstrated stages of the water cycle, including evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and runoff!

This hand-on activity offered a real-world application to the science lessons learned in the classroom, creating an impactful – and memorable – experience that helped them understand and retain the information.

Spreading awareness about the work we do is critical in expanding our capacity to serve more schools throughout the state of North Carolina! We are so grateful to Eric Chilton and the entire team at WFMY News 2 for sharing our story with the community.
