New staff bring professional depth

Carolyn Morrisroe

Perry Hodgkins Jones

Muddy Sneakers is pleased to announce the addition of two accomplished professionals to its administrative staff.

Over the past year, the outdoor education nonprofit has improved its effectiveness by separating its home office from its programming operations. As part of an updated strategic plan focused on continued expansion, Muddy Sneakers filled two key leadership roles: Perry Hodgkins Jones as Development Officer and Carolyn Morrisroe in the newly created position of Communications Coordinator.

Perry was raised in the Northeast and grew up exploring the fields, streams, and green hills of Vermont on weekends and holidays with her family. She credits her childhood experiences outside, both at home and at camp in the Colorado Rockies, as the root of her lifelong passion for environmental advocacy, education, and engagement. After graduating from Wellesley College with a B.A. in international relations, she began work in the fundraising world at UJA-Federation of New York. She received her M.A. in theology and the environment from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, after which she worked as vice president for Warka Water, an international startup nonprofit. Outside the office, Perry enjoys fly-fishing, trail running, stargazing, cooking with her husband, Richmond, and caring for her new baby, Alice.

Growing up in California’s Sierra Nevada foothills, Carolyn endlessly roamed the woods around her house, building forts among pine trees and splashing through streams in search of gold. That love of nature followed her as she got a B.A. in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an M.A. in writing and publishing from Emerson College in Boston. She worked at the Story of Stuff Project and in editorial management at the Pacific Coast Business Times, Penguin Group and The CPA Journal in New York before moving to Western North Carolina in 2014. She served as editor of The Highlander in Highlands and news editor of Mountain Xpress in Asheville, gaining deep knowledge of our mountain communities. Carolyn’s spare hours often find her reading, trail running, training for triathlons, and hiking with her rescue pup, Jack.

“Adding these two key roles, and then to see them filled by such talented staff, marks a high point in the history of our organization,” said Muddy Sneakers Executive Director Ryan Olson. “With Perry and Carolyn on board, Muddy Sneakers is better positioned to reach more communities across the state. We also appreciate that they both bring a true love of the outdoors and a personal understanding of the importance of this work.”
